Dr John MortonI currently teach English Literature at University College London, where I was awarded my PhD in September 2007. The title of my thesis was Tennyson and after and charted the changing literary reputation of the Victorian Laureate from his death in 1892 to 1950. In my thesis I considered creative responses to Tennyson's work and image in poetry, prose and drama in order to come to a better understanding of what A. C. Bradley termed 'The Reaction Against Tennyson' in 1914. I show that this reaction was not, in fact, fully established until the 1920s, and that it endured as late as the 1940s; I also examine in great detail the responses to Tennyson's work by writers as diverse as Joseph Conrad, Arnold Bennett, Wilfred Owen, T. S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, Evelyn Waugh and W. H. Auden. I am currently writing a book entitled 'Tennyson Among the Novelists', which will consider Tennyson's presence in the English novel from 1830 to the present day. I am a contributor to the guardian Books Blog, and have written to the Times Literary Supplement and Essays in Criticism.
